Charlie de Cod has the absolute best value takeaway seafood on the Gold Coast, hands down, and it also tastes so much better than most places from the northern to southern end of the Coast (yes, we try them all).
Some of the other fish and chips shops (e.g. the ones around The Spit/Main Beach) have different coloured batter (therefore mass-produced factory stuff) and fish is almost guaranteed to have a weird smell and/or be watery, but in the far too many times we've had Charlie de Cod that has never happened. :O It's always crispy, fresh, nicely crumbed or battered and super hot. Each time, the calamari is also tender and not rubbery, with some nice large rings, too! The only thing is sometimes, around 1/5 times, the fries aren't super crunchy and could be cooked a little longer, but that's all we can complain about. I know someone recently said it takes a while for an order, but it's usually around 5-10, the most was 15 when super busy.
We usually make our own seafood basket consisting of a snapper (a single piece is huge), two serves of fries, two seafood sticks, 6 crumbed prawns and 12 crumbed calamari, and we always go with chicken salt...Never disappoints. For the last 6 months, we don't even bother going anywhere else for deep fried seafood, even though it takes around 20-30 minutes to get there. Tip: drive down the road to the Broadwater to eat if you don't live nearby.
Also, the place is wide open, which is great in a pandemic. They have a glass door front that's wall-to-wall and it's always open all the way. If that's not enough, there's lots of space outside to wait and because the shop is so wide but not deep, you can hear and see your order easily.
