It sounds snobby to say but I don't usually order Hainanese chicken outside Singapore because I've found the chicken to be dry and overcooked, so this is a dish I almost never have in Melbourne. However, I was most pleasantly surprised to find that the Hainanese chicken at Gai Wong was perfectly cooked, silky and moist. It was served cool, which a friend of mine did comment on, but that's how it's meant to be and I think it helps retain the beautiful texture of the chicken. Overall, I did think that it needed a bit more oomph in flavour, maybe a bit more chilli and salt in the dishes, but Gai Wong seems to be geared towards making nourishing, healthy food, so maybe they didn't want to over season their food, which I can respect. The service was efficient and friendly, and I will definitely be back for more chicken and to try the dishes that were sold out. Great: Hainanese Chicken, Roast Pork Good: Char Siew, Chicken Curry, noodles, Chicken broth, Greens Not my thang: Gai See Hor Fun (bit bland), Chai Boey (too sour for my taste, but my friends liked it), Soy Braised Eggs (bland) Sold out (so didn't get to try): Fried Chicken Wings, Chicken Crackling, Gizzard See less

When you go to a restaurant, some places remind you of home. And home is where the heart is. Traditional chicken rice I grew up eating. Served cold, with a layer of natural collagen and rice so fragrant it brings me right back to when I was 12 years old in Malaysia. Now please understand that this is how it’s traditionally served. If you don’t like this, please go order from somewhere else. But if you don’t mind it, trust me. Give this place a go. The food is made with so much love you can feel it with every bite. And for that, I’d like to say thank you for to the team at Gai Wong. For bringing me back home during this pandemic while travel isn’t allowed. See less

We've been supporters of Gai Wong since they opened during the pandemic last year. We live right beside them and I don't think we'll ever get tired of their food. Love every single dish they have - especially their limited edition items! (please bring the wontons back soon!) Uncle Lip, Shirley, and Max have always been so welcoming and friendly and have always made us feel at home. Everyone at Gai Wong are just amazing. Uncle Lip even entertained my idea of a chicken rice cake for my husband's birthday last year. Needless to say it was the best cake we've ever had! To have a business thrive in the midst of a pandemic really says a lot. They deserve all the success they've had. I'm always looking forward to my next meal at Gai Wong and would highly recommend them to anyone who wants a taste of Hainanese chicken rice that's cooked to perfection. See less

Deliciously silky Hanain Chicken rice, Malaysian chicken curry and more savory delights. This is the unpretentious taste of the kinds of hawker stalls people queue for in Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei. Get in, eat and don't linger. Leave to have dessert, so others can grab a table there. Shiok! See less

Delicious Hainanese chicken and Crispy pork set. The homemade sauces are an absolute stand out as is the fragrant and flavourful rice! And all this from a delivery order and heated up at home. Can't wait to try it fresh from the kitchen once lockdown is over! See less

Late quiet lunch for two. Place is clean. Chicken is served cold, tender and good flavour from the sauce. Would prefer Chilli garlic to have more kicks (extra spiciness). Chai buey is yummy! Chicken crackling is served cold 🥶 which I would prefer piping hot. Affordable pricing and will keep an eye on its new product. Keep it up Gai Wong See less

Was good but not as great as I was expecting. The chicken and Kon lo mee were good. However the chicken rice (not the chicken) was dry and cold and the Gai see hor fun was ordinary. I like the concept and would want to return to give it one more try before I write it off See less

Came here due to seeing some one posted about this restaurant on a FB group. We visited and ordered a takeaway from this place. We must say that the foods were really delicious! We ordered their roast pork, hainanese chicken on rice, chai boey, and gai see hor fun. The taste was quite authentic! The prices were also quite affordable for the quality and the size. We are happy that we found this place. Will come to visit again next time to order more dishes. See less

Edit: Thanks for the tips. If takeaway, eat your chicken cold. Original: Haven't had Hainanese chicken meat like this for a long time. It is tender, so white, and flavourful. The rice is good but the chicken takes the spotlight. We tried other dishes too (pao ka liao and kidney/gizzard). They are ok. Place is quite busy. I think it's better to do a takeaway. Hainanese chicken rice is microwave friendly, just heat up for the rice only and have it with the chicken at room temperature. See less

If you're fan of Malaysian and Singapore Chinese hawker fare, you'll enjoy the Chicken Rice and similar dishes at Gai Wong. Food is prepared and served as it would be near the equator, but unfortunately in cold Melbourne weather that means a lot of it is distinctly cold when it reaches your table, rather than lukewarm as it would be in the tropics. Would give 5 stars if they accounted for the different climate and served rice and other items as warm as they would be in the tropics rather than as cold as they are in Melbourne. See less

came by with a group of Singaporean friends tonight. we have all been in Melbourne for more than 10 years, and the chicken at Gai Wong is undisputed the best Hainan chicken in Melbourne and probably Australia. it is the closest to what we enjoy in Singapore, cold chicken with the gelatanious chicken jelly underneath the skin. it even has dark sauce, which is what we eat with our chicken rice in Singapore. simply sensational stuff. nothing comes close in Melbourne, and yes, we have been searching for the longest time. owner is very friendly and extremely dedicated to the craft, thanks for the great chat at the end of a fantastic meal tonight. My Malaysian and Singaporean friends took me there yesterday. The food was really nice and the service there was so good and friendly. (Especially the owner lady and the manager, they were really friendly and opened the door to let us eat durian cake 🍰) * You will get a chicken rice cake when you dine in on your birthday hahaha that’s really cute See less

Excellent place to get your fix on South East Asian hawker food. The hainanese Chicken was soft and clean tasting. The roast pork had crispy skin and juicy meat. Chicken wing was pretty average tasting. The bbq pork and the dry Noodle combo was the best out of all the dishes. Food - 8 Service - 8 Vibe - 7 Price - $$ See less
