Good place to stop while visiting the sculpture park. The menu has some great creative dishes and the wine is pretty good. Service and kitchen slow though, it's always a bit of a red flag when you're chasing the waiting staff! See less

We ordered the lockdown take out menu for 4 – absolutely sensational, very generous portions – Ribeye steak cooked to perfection – Freddies fried chicken devine, hope it never leaves the menu – Fresh Mozzarella salad along with Roast vegetable salad with goats cheese , green salad – not to forget the Fresh Prawn macaroni. A 5 star menu takeout that can not be faulted was such a treat for the family. Thank you Rothko See less

Amazing food! The fired chicken was crisp outside and meltingly soft inside. The sirloin and broccoli were cooked to perfection, and the salmon was very fresh. I would love to give 5 stars for the food and wine, but the service only worth 3 stars. So I am giving 4 stars. See less

Repeat diner here - because it is excellent. The scampi is delicious, but it is in some excellent company. The marlin, the steaks and the fish and chip meal were outstanding 👌. Lovely selection of wines. Very attentive, friendly staff and the setting is sublime! See less

We decided to go to Rothkos for a special lunch on the final day of our annual holiday. We liked the prospect of a top meal and then a stroll in the garden. It's a beautiful place; peaceful, beautifully landscaped and well designed. We rolled up in our mobility van, got a table with plenty of room for the wheelchair and gave our order to the attentive staff. That's when things deteriorated. We go out to eat often and the fact that my husband needs his food processed has NEVER been a problem. Until today. He ordered fish but the chef felt that by processing the meal it would not meet his refined standards of presentation. My husband often has fish and all the kitchens seem ok with processing the food and presenting him with delicious and creative options. As I said we have never had this reaction in NZ before. The staff seemed to be surprised but accepted that a good meal is not possible for people like us. You advertise the importance of recognizing that diversity is important and helps our world in many ways, but when it comes to the really important stuff of life you simply don't get it. This experience indicates that you cannot take the elderly, the infirm, the very young or anyone who does not fit your version of suitable people to this restaurant. Brenden the chef doesn't want people like us in his restaurant. I ordered steak. $55 for the steak and a gigantic dinner plate of New World mixed leaves with no dressing or any other additions. My husband had tomato soup He ask for his soup in a mug but we were told that their mugs didnt look right. So I trotted out to the van and got one and afterwards washed it out in the car park. So it wasn't very pleasant, we fought off the flies, ate our weird meal and left. We dont complain about the treatment we get very often but this was especially awful. We do not recommend Rothkos unless you are fully able bodied and dont mind a bit of food snobbery. See less

I usually only write reviews if I have a positive experience and I feel especially bad writing a negative one given the difficulty the hospitality industry is facing with COVID. However, I felt incredibly let down by the service here and felt it necessary to give some feedback as there is a lot of potential at Rothko. Positives: The restaurant is set in a beautiful location. The espresso martinis (which weren't even on the cocktail menu, we had to order ourselves) were FANTASTIC! Kudos to the bartender. The food was delicious but it's a shame that the kitchen staff work so hard only to be let down by the front of house. Negatives: The service. Where do I begin? Our server (and the rest of the FOH staff we encountered) were not familiar with the menu. Our server could not work his ipad to put our order in and was practically holding it in front of our face to show us the options like he wanted us to work it for him. You would also think in a restaurant set in a vineyard that the staff would attempt to up-sell or make local wine recommendations however, this was not the case. After our server placed our order, he basically absconded all responsibility of our table and didn't offer us anything else or even check on us. Other staff walked past our table and despite making eye contact with us and us saying "excuse me" to try and order more food, they walked off. The food runner did not explain the food as it came out and after placing our plates in the middle of the table, returned later and just plopped a steak knife upside down, next to my partner's cutlery and walked off. I would be more forgiving if the restaurant was packed but it wasn't and we spent 200+ dollars on our meals as it was my partner's birthday dinner. Moreover, my partner and I could overhear tables around us complaining of the service and experiencing similar problems. I felt compelled to write this review as there is SO MUCH POTENTIAL, it's such a shame. See less

Was really looking forward to lunch today and left totally disappointed. Do not be fooled by the tidy upkeep of the grounds, because the same level of maintenance and care is not spared for patrons. We were a group who patiently waited for our food but may as well have been forgotten statues for the attention we were given. I cannot believe multiple staff routinely passed our table over the course of our near 2 hour stay but not once thought to check in and update us about where on earth our meals were or whether our long empty drinks may have deserved replacements. Only after a desperate inquiry on when we would be fed were we met with an uncertain and inaccurate time estimate. We left with bitter palates and empty stomachs. See less

Can't give it 0 stars so I'll have to settle for one. Absolutely appalling service. Booked in 5 people for lunch today and sat and waited 2 hours for food. We only received our starters and drinks in this time and when we finally gave up and asked where the food was the waitress looked blank obviously our food had been forgotten. 2 hours with a hungry six year old who only ordered fries and in the end left without eating.. my mother and sister who travelled from south head to matakana for lunch are also leaving hungry and to top all it all off we were charged 82$ for drinks and 3 starters..rip off waste of time highly dissatisfying experience. Such a shame as rothko USED to be fabulous but now you couldn't pay me to go back there. See less

Came here with mates over the weekends and spent close to $400 as a group. got 2 fried chickens which was delicious thanks to the sauce. The fried chicken it self was slightly over cooked and that was alright. the fries were alright. The mains were steaks and sides of asparagus & corn. The Scampi toast was bloody rip off. 2 puny pieces of bread. the toast was pressed in a sandwich grill press and was expecting more. Very weak entree. Experience was alright. Service was good & staff were pleasant & attentive. They have a good selection but given the price you pay it left most of us hungry after the meal. Once we got back to Auckland we had to go our local to get properly fed See less

The portion sizes are tiny - ordered a pork chop main dish for $36, which had a miniscule amount of corn, not much meat but a lot of fat, and some really fatty sauce, came away still feeling really hungry. Customer service also wasn't great, waitress said the mains would take 30 mins to arrive (we came after peak lunch time at 1:30pm, so I was surprised it would take that long for a pork chop) and it took 45 mins. Definitely not worth going back to. Rusty Pelican or other restaurants in Matakana are a lot better. See less
