We used to like this place but now not sure it is the new management, the food quality has dropped tremendously. We ordered the beef sukiyaki and it was full of onions and udon which is not mentioned in the menu, there is hardly any beef and more like eating udon soup. The eel was so fishy that we couldn’t eat it. We waited long time for our drinks to arrive and the restaurant is not even busy. Have to look for a other Japanese restaurant now to go to. See less

The freshest nicest tempura I've had for a long time! Lovely ambience, service and quality taste. Don't forget to try the warm Saki and karaage fried chicken 🌞 Also surprisingly reasonable for such to quality in North Adelaide. See less

AMAZING! This family owned business is simply awesome. I ate here three nights in a row, just to try different dishes! LOL. Sashimi and agedashi tofu was brilliant; eel with soba noodles was simply amazing. First place I will have dinner on my next visit to Adelaide. 😎🏆👊 See less

Small family run restaurant. Nice atmosphere. Staff still remembered me after being a year away. Go for banquet option A which adds starters, rice, miso soup and ice cream to your choice of the menu. The sake is a bargain! Thoroughly enjoyable evening. See less

The taste is a more like a supermarket level. Such as the eel, teriyaki chicken, the ginger beef and the ice cream. However, the charge is a premium. Dish is tiny. One star is purely because the service is good. See less

Got a Hotel room from Meridien Hotel at Melbourne Street, Adelaide. Walking along the street and found this amazing Japanese Restaurant on Melbourne Street called Sato. We didn’t have a booking and the waiter at the door came within second to greed on a busy Saturday night. We were leaded to a deck table and straight away serve with table water without asking. We were attended as soon as we closed our menu. Amazing service. Ordered sashimi selection as an entree. Then a Noodle dish with Teriyaki Beef. A side of Saki and a Cocktail special. Everything is freshly made and cook with good taste. The use of ginger in the Teriyaki sauce is perfect and the Marin vinegar is on the spot. Amazing sauce. The Saki was warmed up slightly. The cocktail is fantastic. The only point to make the staff to aware of the plating, garnishing needs extra work with it. It is a bit scattered. The most impressive is the bathroom. Even though all the plant is faked but it does catch peoples’ eyes. Great concept. Fully recommended to try out. Great jobs! See less

The location is in Melbourne street with number of restaurants and coffee shops around. The staff were very friendly and the service was good and quick. Nice selection of drinks.The decor was dated and not very well maintained ( which matches the food) with Japanese elements in it. Traditional seating is available. We ordered two appetisers and two mains. The sashimi salad was not very good! The combination doesn't quite work together. For sushis you could definitely tell that they don't taste fresh and smell a bit. Chicken teriyaki was the best dish although it was a bit too salty. The pork katsu with rice and caramelised onion and egg on top was a sample of sloppy food prep! The pork katsu should be crispy and juicy which wasn't in this case. The miso soup was average. Id give it 6* if I could! Sato is the loveliest little Japanese restaurant nestled amoungst the busy Melbourne St in North Adelaide. The Japanese interior designs, art work and table settings including traditional Japanese seating really give the restaurant its authentic feel. The staff are very polite, friendly and food service is quick. I savoured every bite of the Special banquet for 2 with my wife. Every dish that was brought out had fresh ingredients and was mouthwatering tasty!! Theu have traditional Japanese beers, cocktails and Ramune for the kids (..and adults) Most definitely be back again!!!! They are in the Entertainment Book so give them a try I guarantee you will return. See less

Visited this restaurant a couple of weeks ago with my daughter and her friend. Prior to our visit, I called ahead and spoke with Saki to make a reservation. She made me aware of the seating styles and we opted for the traditional style. This is where you are able to extend your legs under the table instead of sitting on a cushion (zabuton) with your legs crossed on a tatami floor. Stepping inside 'Sato' was like going back in time to the days spent living in Tokyo... very nostalgic indeed. We ordered a few different dishes so that my daughter and her friend could taste the variety. The food arrived quickly and was very enjoyable, everything was just the way it's supposed to be. The young lady waiting on us (Hana) was very pleasant and friendly. I found out from her that Saki who took our phone reservation was her sister and they were the owner's daughters. After a while the owner came over to our table to have a quick chat and we learnt that his wife was also involved in the running of the kitchen. This was reflected in the very friendly atmosphere prevalent at 'Sato'. The menu is varied and can be recommended to anyone looking for an authentic Japanese dining experience. The 'unagi don' was almost as good as the one I had in Yaezu shi, Shizuoka prefecture. There is a good selection of Japanese beers as well. The dining experience at 'Sato' for me personally was very satisfying as it brought back good memories of evenings spent dining out in Tokyo. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ See less
